About

Amabere Caves

The Amabere Caves are one of Fortportal's most iconic landmarks a remarkable fusion of natural geology and living Toro Kingdom mythology. The name 'Amabere' means 'breasts' in the local Rutooro language, referring to the stalactites and stalagmites whose dripping formations resemble a nursing mother. According to Toro Kingdom oral tradition, the caves are connected to the legendary Princess Nyinamwiru. Beyond the mythology, the caves are a genuine natural wonder hosting endemic flora and fauna species, a beautiful waterfall that cascades inside the cave complex, and panoramic views of the surrounding crater lakes and Rwenzori Mountains.
