RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Mountains of the Moon · UNESCO World Heritage Site · Africa's Last Tropical Glaciers
Rwenzori Mountains National Park
The Rwenzori Mountains immortalised by Ptolemy as the "Mountains of the Moon" rise dramatically on the Uganda-DRC border, visible from Fortportal on clear days. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, they hold Africa's last tropical glaciers and one of the continent's most unique Afro-alpine ecosystems. Unlike volcanic ranges, the Rwenzoris are ancient fault-block mountains shaped by tectonic forces over millions of years. Their slopes cycle through tropical forest, bamboo zones, heather moorland, and glaciated peaks. The iconic giant groundsels, giant lobelias, and tree heathers found here exist nowhere else on earth.
What to do
Summit Trek (7–9 Days)
The full Rwenzori Circuit ascending through 5 vegetation zones to the glaciated Margherita Peak (5,109m). One of Africa's most rewarding multi-day treks, far less crowded than Kilimanjaro.
Central Circuit (4–5 Days)
A shorter loop through the mid-altitude zones giant heather forests, glacier-fed streams, and spectacular views without reaching the peak. Moderately challenging, very rewarding.
Day Hikes from Kasese
Single day guided hikes into the lower forest zones ideal if you only have a day. See giant ferns, mountain streams, and the famous Afro-alpine flora without an overnight commitment.
Forest Birding
The Rwenzoris have 217 species including 19 Albertine Rift endemics. The Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, and strange weaver are highlights for birders.
2 Day Trek to Sine Camp
The 2-Day Trek to Sine Camp in the Rwenzori Mountains is a short but rewarding adventure along the Kilembe Trail, climbing to 2,596 meters through Afro-montane forest and bamboo zones. It’s ideal for travelers who want a taste of the Rwenzori without committing to a week-long expedition.
"Beautiful and unique. A must visit! Multiple days are needed. The uniqueness is on altitudes up to 4,500 metres. As Europeans it felt very strange to have so much support staff — it was a five-star hotel experience up the mountain."
"The best mountain national park in East Africa — much less crowded than Kilimanjaro or Kenya. Trees available up to 3,800 metres, routes are well marked, and you can sleep in huts. You need to see the last glaciers before they melt."
"The scenery is breathtaking. I twisted my ankle on the way down and not only did our porters help me — porters from other groups came to assist too. The kindness of these people is unforgettable."
The Rwenzori Mountains are visible from the festival stage at Lake Saaka. For a full mountain experience, book a day hike for the morning of 31 Oct (Day 3) before the Grand Finale evening concert. Or as an event extension.
