LAKE NKURUBA NATURE RESERVE
Pristine Crater Lake · Red Colobus Monkeys · Community Campsite
Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve
Lake Nkuruba is one of those rare places where you feel the world slow down completely. A perfect volcanic crater lake surrounded by dense tropical forest, it sits within a community-managed nature reserve that has been protecting this pristine ecosystem for decades. The reserve is home to five primate species including Red Colobus monkeys, Black-and-white Colobus, Vervet monkeys, baboons, and the charming Grey-cheeked Mangabey. Visitors often wake to Red Colobus monkeys in the trees directly above their tents. Beyond the wildlife, Lake Nkuruba offers some of the most spectacular guided crater lake walks in western Uganda — winding through banana plantations, vanilla farms, rural villages, and multiple crater lakes in a single morning.
What to do
Guided Crater Lake Walk (4 hrs)
The highlight — a 4-hour guided walk through the landscape visiting multiple crater lakes, local villages, banana and vanilla plantations. Led by community guides with deep local knowledge.
Swimming in the Crater Lake
The crystal-clear waters of Lake Nkuruba are safe for swimming, though the depth drops off sharply from the rocky edges. Bring a friend — the rock entry is slippery. Best at midday when the light turns the water emerald.
Primate Watching
Five primate species inhabit the reserve and are frequently seen around the campsite and lake edge. Red Colobus are particularly visible at dawn and dusk in the treetops. Mongoose also roam the grounds.
Camping & Overnight Stays
The community campsite offers tent pitches and basic bandas at the lake edge. Communal kitchen, simple meals, hot showers. Possibly the most peaceful night's sleep in Uganda. Book in advance for festival weekend.
"Probably my favourite campsite from my entire Uganda trip. The views, the lake, the nature — just wonderful. We woke up to Red Colobus in the tree above our tent and spent the morning watching three different types of monkey."
"We did the crater lake walk with Robert — 4 hours through beautiful landscapes, several crater lakes, small villages, and a banana and vanilla plantation. After the hike, a super delicious meal. I loved this location!"
"Beautiful, peaceful nature oasis — a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature! I hope it can one day be reconnected to Kibale forest so the wildlife can move more freely. A treasure of Uganda."
The reserve runs beautiful 4-hour guided walks through crater lakes and local villages. Book for the morning of Day 1 or Day 2 before heading to the festival — you'll return refreshed and inspired.
